Dr Irma Kruger is a Paediatric Specialist that is based in Malmesbury, Western Cape. She graduated as a medical doctor in 2002 from Stellenbosch University. She proceeded to do her internship in 2003 and community service in 2004 at Kimberley Hospital Complex, Northern Cape, where she gained valuable experience as a generalist, including experience in surgery, adult medicine, obstetrics, gynaecology, anaesthetics and paediatrics. With her interest in anaesthetics, Dr Kruger studied and obtained a Diploma in Anaesthetics in 2004 from The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.


In 2005, Dr Kruger returned to the Western Cape to take on the role of medical officer in paediatrics at Paarl Hospital. During 2006, she relocated to Nottingham, England to work at the BMI Park Hospital as a Resident Medical Officer.

Dr Kruger returned to South Africa at the end of 2006 and worked at Tygerberg Hospital as a Medical Officer in the Paediatric Department from 2006 - 2008. This experience set her on her course to specialise in paediatrics. During the second half of 2008, she was granted entry into the MMed Paediatrics programme at the University of Stellenbosch and started her specialisation at Worcester Hospital. While working there, Dr Kruger developed her love for general and community paediatrics. After a year, she returned to Tygerberg Hospital for the remainder of her specialisation and realised her passion for children infected and affected by HIV and Tuberculosis.

After completion of her specialisation, Dr Kruger spent some time as a consultant at the HIV clinic and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Tygerberg Hospital. She then moved to the NGO sector working at two different NGOs (South to South and Kheth’Impilo), providing technical support, training and mentoring to healthcare workers working with children infected and affected by HIV and tuberculosis in KZN, EC, NC and the WC.
